Transforming journeys for 75k+ tier 2 and 3 students in India

How we boosted 64% engagement by hacking into a complex UX problem

Introduction

Discovery of flaws in Job hunters

Soon after joining Beep, We recognized that students and professionals, especially from Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, were stuck in a loop of rejection. They were eager to grow but lacked the tools and knowledge to align with industry expectations.

As someone leading design team, I knew this wasn’t just a design problem -> it was a human problem.

What is Beep though?

Beep is more than just another job platform. It’s a digital community where students and professionals can explore opportunities, learn new skills, and earn meaningful careers. We sought to redefine how users accessed jobs, events, and programs, addressing the challenges of a competitive job market for underserved communities. Recruiters were an integral part of our product, and improving the candidate's quality would directly affect the recruiters as well. Beep was now aiming to imrpove job opportunities for tier 2 and 3 cities in India.

Problem breakdown

Why were users struggling?

Many users lacked clarity on what employers sought, leading to low success rates and widespread disengagement. This frustration stemmed from a lack of access to proper guidance and industry-relevant learning resources, creating a need for Beep to bridge the gap. We discovered that many users, especially those in smaller cities, lacked industry-specific knowledge about the roles they were applying for. This resulted in widespread frustration and disengagement.

Lack of Clarity

Many users didn’t understand what employers were looking for, leading to mismatched applications.

High Frustration
Job rejections were demotivating users, particularly in underserved regions.

Reduced Engagement

The platform’s existing features weren’t effectively guiding users toward skill-building opportunities.

Research

Understanding our target groups

Through user research and data analysis, we learned that users were eager for resources to improve their job readiness. Events and programs emerged as key opportunities to help users learn and grow while keeping them engaged with the platform.

Brainstorming

Rethinking the Experience

Our vision was to create a seamless ecosystem where users could discover jobs, gain skills, and improve their chances of success. By making learning and exploration part of the journey, users needed to have accessibility to learnings, knowledge and awareness even before applying for jobs.

Two problems at a time

It was clear, candidates were not aware of applying effectively for jobs and in turn left with rejection and frustration. They were unable to keep up with the trends and confusion caused them to apply for jobs without proper knowledge. In turn, Recruiters ended up with unskilled candidates or incomplete profiles.

Proposed Solution

Building Intuitive Flows

By introducing features like auto-filled text fields, a prominent profile banner, completion indicators and bottom sheet, we reduced drop-offs by 45%. Iterative testing ensured that user feedback directly informed our design decisions.

Making Job Application attractive

By highlighting the information that mattered, users were able to apply to opportunities effectively. Since we limited this feature to 5 jobs a day, many users started building a habit of using Job matcher daily. Retention rate was skyrocketing and healthy job applications were being sent to the recruiters

Upskill with Events

By organizing events into upcoming, live, and past categories, we simplified navigation and increased participation by 56%. We also added a limited seats feature which further increased the engagement. All of our events showed a 89% registered to participation ratio.

Did it work?

Validating the approach

We began to see significant improvements in engagement and user satisfaction. Registration drop-offs decreased by 45%, and participation in Events and Programs increased by 60%. These results highlighted the success of our design solutions. Beep’s transformation not only improved user engagement but also paved the way for monetization through the Pro Plan. The platform started becoming a trusted resource for career growth, empowering its 75,000+ users with actionable tools and opportunities. We eventually launched a Pro Plan, achieving 20% adoption in the first quarter.
